  • "Marilyn in New York" by Sam Shaw Now on View

    December 22, 2012

"Marilyn in New York," an exhibit of photos by Sam Shaw, is now on view in the 42nd Street / Bryant Park subway station and outside the Times Square subway station in New York City. As part of the Metropolitan Transit Authority's Arts for Transit program, the exhibit honors Marilyn Monroe 50 years after her death and is part of Sam Shaw's 2012 centennial celebration.

Sam was a lifelong New Yorker and Marilyn made the city her home. “The New York City Subway made Marilyn Monroe's most iconic image possible through its serendipitous updrafts from our sidewalk ventilation grates,” said Lester Burg, MTA Arts for Transit's manager who handles the lightbox program. “And now the image is returning home through the MTA's program to enliven the subway with engaging photos by New York photographers. Matching the mass transit setting with a pop culture figure beloved by the masses seemed like a great fit.”

The exhibit features rarely seen images of Marilyn at iconic New York locations such as Central Park and the Plaza fountain. There are 8 photographs on display at Bryant Park, and one photo at the Times Square location. The exhibition will be on display for one year.
